Another Traverse

For the next 4-5 weeks, we (Evan and Keith) are doing geology research in Nederland, CO, which is above Boulder. Departing Williamstown on the 3rd, we drove Evan's brother's Subaru- a true road warrior- all the way out here.

The trip started off with a 20-hour straight-shot to Chicago, which was brutal, but we decided it was probably the best way to get through those states. We had a place to stay outside the city, so we spent the 4th kayaking on Lake Michigan and catching up on the sleep we had lost on the way there. From there it was on to Council Bluffs, Iowa, a truly dreadful place. From our room in the motel 6, we could see nothing but concrete and judging by the smell, the car we parked next to probably had a dead body in the trunk. The next four nights were in various places in Wyoming (Laramie, Jackson Hole twice, and Cody). Now we are finally in Colorado, about to dive into our work.

A couple charitable views of the midwest. Most of it looks worse than this.

After 1500 miles of corn, the Tetons blew us away.

Keith, Jackson Lake, and the Grand Teton.

In Jackson Hole, we stayed with our friend Adam Carman (below), an alpine skier
who just finished at Williams.

Adam and his friend took us kayaking on the Snake River, which was wicked fun.

Arguably the highlight of the entire trip, we ran into a family of otters. They
were actually much closer to us at times!

"Excuse me, ma'am- could I interest you in a new kayak?"

From Jackson, we shot north and blitzed Yellowstone. Above is a
Grizzly.

This bison decided to stroll into the road as we we're driving by. It was
easily touchable, but luckily, we slipped by. The next car was not so lucky,
and a traffic jam ensued as the bison had a thought in the middle of the road.

Hot springs

Wyoming is a bizarre state. A lot of strange stuff and not
many people, but it's ruggedly gorgeous.

Now we're in Colorado, actually doing some work. We sleep every night
in a cabin at 9,500 ft, and have been working up towards 12,000. Ideally,
we'll have some pretty nice blood by the end of this.

Despite often appearing as newly-weds, we're having a great time!
