Quebec Time Trial

The warm weather rolled in with the fog yesterday evening. We decided, for the first time, to switch our traditional Canadian time trial from classic to skate technique.

It was about +2 Celsius at race start, misty, and the track was fresh groomed but wet and slow. The format: time trial, 30 second intervals, reverse order from the top of last year's skate rankings, two laps for men and one lap for women (about 5 km per lap). Kristen, who is still rehabbing her shins from compartment syndrome surgery, decided to classic ski the trial.

A hard effort was put in by all, and the only mishap was a broken pole (Isaac, second lap).

Dimitri Luethi clocked both the fastest lap time and the fastest time of the day, with Keith Kantack finishing 27 seconds back (with nearly even splits) and Mark Johnson in third, 33 seconds behind Keith.

In the women's race Sarah Tory took first by just three seconds over Hannah Hausman. There was a tie for third between Maddy Wendt and Andrea Fisher (Coach Fisher's daughter who is a freshman at Bates).

In the afternoon we skiied an easy 1.5 hr recovery through the hanging mist, and then the men's and women's teams collaborated on cooking dinner. Because we forgot that the Canadian supermarkets close on New Years day we had to come up with a dinner that could be made from goods sold at the mini-market on the corner and whatever leftover ingredients were on our own shelves: scalloped baked potatoes and onions, garlic bread, egg and cheese frittata.

We ate while watching a rerun of today's Tour de Ski pursuit and even though we knew some of the results, it was exciting to see what actually went down and also to watch the Canadian men grab a couple top spots.

We are so sad to leave Quebec tomorrow!

On the start line: Patrick is first to leave the gate.
