The temperatures dropped but the sun rose in a blue sky for Saturday's 3x6.6k relay. The snow was sharp and slow which meant no gliding rest for the racers. But that didn't slow the Purple Cows!
Sarah Tory led the sprint start for the women's A team and kept up front with the leaders until breaking a pole midway through the first lap. She found another pole and skiied back into 5th place by the tag to teammate Maddy Wendt. Both Maddy and third-leg Kirsten Johnson fought hard to maintain a 6th place finish.
The men's A team was put into position by a sprint start from Mark Johnson. Mojo kept up with the top pack through one lap, and when the Dartmouth A team split off the front he settled into the chase pack of UVM, UNH, Bates, and Colby. Keith Kantack had a blazing leg and left most of those teams in the dust by following on the heel plates of UVM's Franz Bernstein for a lap and a half. Finish leg Dimitri Luthi was handed a third place seat and he made sure that Williams kept that place, sprinting for the finish with a sizeable lead over 4th.
Williams fielded two full women's teams and three full men's teams. The coaches were totally psyched that so many - all?! - of the team members had great races, great split times on their legs, and skiied Really Freaking Hard.
