Defeat in Soccer Match, but Big Win in Weather for Mountain Day

The men's team invited the women's JV soccer team to a duel on Thursday evening and the match was a good one. The game ended just as the sun set, the women's soccer team edging our men's nordic team with a final score of 2-1.  Muddy Fun.

Hiking onto Stony Ledge

Only part of the large crowd of students on top of Stony Ledge
The bells on campus began ringing at 6am on Friday morning, the official declaration of Mountain Day! And it was a stunning day. The day was perfectly bluebird, no wind, 70 degrees (I didn't get any great photos, so hopefully someone will post better ones).  An estimated 4-500 students made it up to Stony Ledge, including most of our nordic team. A number of the team ran a 4 hour loop from Pine Cobble's AT trail around to the base and then summit of Greylock.  Several other team members did a Schnell preview up Greylock to get to the top. Several more joined in on one of the shorter campus hikes to reach Stony Ledge.  Cider, donuts, and acappella groups lasted several hours at the Ledge, ending with a rousing rendition by the whole crowd of the school's "The Mountains" song.

The Mountains

O, proudly rise the monarchs of our mountain land,
With their kingly forest robes, to the sky,
Where Alma Mater dwelleth with the chosen band,
And the peaceful river floweth gently by.
CHORUS
The mountains! the mountains! we greet them with a song,
Whose echoes rebounding their woodland heights along,
Shall mingle with anthems that winds and fountains sing.
'til hill and valley gaily, gaily ring.
Beneath their peaceful shadows may old Williams stand,
'til suns and mountains nevermore shall be,
The glory and the honor of our mountain land,
And the dwelling of the gallant and the free.
