Running with Jessie Diggins!

This past Wednesday the women's team and Franklin had the opportunity to go running with Jessie Diggins at Prospect ski mountain.  Jessie and Sophie Caldwell came to speak about their experiences as professional nordic skiers to raise money for Prospect.  Jessie was nice enough to come slightly early to check out the ski trails with the team.  Many thanks to freshman Siri for getting in touch with her childhood babysitter and friend to coordinate the event.  I hope I have the opportunity to skate behind Jessie one day as well.  Below are some personal reflections on the afternoon:

I enjoyed learning about how Jessie prepares herself mentally for a race.  After doing a pre-race ski she sets three goals.  The first goal is a pacing goal about how she is going to attack the race.  She splits up the course mentally into segments and knows what she plans on doing for each segment.  This way, during the race she does not need to waste mental energy thinking about what the best strategy might me.  Of course, she must be open to change the plan given the circumstances but can start the race with confidence.  Her second goal is a technique goal with a cue word.  This way she can remind herself of this cue word throughout the race to check in on her technique.  The last goal is a mental focus that she can come back to, a mantra.  She aims to leave everything out on the course for every race.  She feels like the worst feeling is crossing the finish and wondering if you could have pushed harder and beaten that girl, but instead knowing you were the fastest you on that very day in that very moment.

We also appreciated listening to Jessie talk about her struggles with an eating disorder.  For more info check out her blog: http://jessiediggins.com/body-issues/.  It was very powerful to hear one of the fastest women in the world speak about her own struggles and how she got the help she needed.  She elaborated on how she felt while she was struggling, recovering, and afterwards and what we can do as teammates to support one another.  Afterwards, she spoke about her decision to model for Sports Illustrated recently and what the process was like.  It is empowering to know that everyone has their own struggles and she is stronger because of her experiences.  We are lucky to have such a strong female role model out on the World Cup course kicking' butt!

Team goal this year is to stretch more.

Tricky to run down an alpine slope but maybe not as hard as on skis when there is ice.

Featured on Jessie's insta.  Check it out.

Listening to the story of the Olympic gold-medal relay after eating our Cilantro burritos.  Prospective student Hadassah from Washington also enjoyed getting to hear the Olympians speak.

Jessie recounted how coming around into the final straight away it was as if the volume knob was turned completely down.  She remembers very little of the finish except trying to get every last piece of energy out of every push.  She looked to the side at the finish and saw her boot slightly ahead and Kikkan running towards her.  It was as if she blacked out that last straight away and was just skiing off of pure adrenaline and heart.  Jessie recalled, "When you are so in the zone you tune everything out." This must have been the feeling Jack Schrupp has been aiming for all these years.

I was struck by throughout the run how many times Jessie recalled 'almost dying.'  Coming down the downhill into the finish in the relay she almost flew off the course.  Finishing races she gives it all she has and doesn't know if there is anything left in the tank.  One of my goals for the year is to leave it all out on the course and 'almost die' just like Jessie but have faith in myself, my training, and my teammates to know I will pull through and finish strong.

We wish Jessie and the rest of the US women's ski team best of luck in the upcoming season.  We are super excited for the possibility of the women's team taking the team relay this year.  At every camp, Jessie works to sync up her training and learn from what her teammates.  She tries to give one genuine compliment to one teammate at each practice about something she sees them improving on.  I am so proud to call myself a female nordic skier in this country and cannot wait for the rest of the world to continue to see the strength of American female nordic skiing.  Many many thanks to Jessie, Sophie and Siri!

Can't wait for coached practice to start this Tuesday!

First Week Shenanigans + NZ throwback

Happy September! With the start of classes and captains' practice, the team has jumped right back into it.

Maple syrup was yummmmm

Finishing the OD with a run up to the Taconic Crest

We ran the 3k on a dark and cloudy afternoon, but luckily the results were much brighter. PRs were happening left and right!

The men on their first lap of the 3k!

Woohoo such speedy women!
Spectator squad, featuring the one and only Hannah Benson, ski team alum '17, here for a brief visit, and of course, Lime
While I was in New Zealand over the summer, I came across some ski magazines from the 70s and 80s. A highlight that could be useful for our fall training:
The key to beating Dartmouth this winter?

Snow Farm!
While in New Zealand, I made a podcast about one of their deep, alpine lakes (Lake Wanaka, just 45 min away from the Snow Farm).

Here it is on the itunes podcast app:

First Captain's Practice

The team has finally begun training together.  Our first practice on Thursday was a sweaty and humid run up RRR. So excited for fall training to commence! So far 7/7 at all three practices.

Adventures in The Adirondacks

Hello everybody! Greetings from Williamstown. It was an amazing summer and I'm now looking forward to a great year with the team. Here's a recap of what this McGrew was up to for the past three months and some notable moments from the summer:
Out with the old (1000 miles approx.) and in with the new (0 miles).

Finding them
Searching for caves

Enjoying the pristine beauty of Eagle Crag Lake before a hard week of training.
Thinking of Frank during workout #1
Workout #2... finding the nearest hill to bump start the car. A dead battery can sometimes be fun.

Paddling Dead Creek which was unsurprisingly very alive.

I've always wanted to visit Poland.

Went to Norway as well while in the area.
After picking two ephs up at the airport Andrew showed us his fishing prowess.

Four-hour run to find this absolutely fantastic view.
Max enjoyed the run far less than Emil.

After spending Labor Day weekend in Long Lake with most of the mens team, I headed back to Williamstown. It is now time to put in some more work and have a great winter!

Advice

Happy Fall Semester Team! (updated version)

All of my former teammates have left their mark on me one way or another.  They will always hold a special place in my heart and be counted on to answer a call for help.  This week, I texted all the former captains who lead the team while I was on the team and sent a call for help.  Being a captain means creating spaces for others to be their best self and knowing when to ask for help.  Therefore, I turned to my teammates who have influenced and lead me to provide advice, warnings, recommendations, and ruminations to the incoming freshman.  Here's what they responded:

Sarah Becker '18

Jack Schrupp '18

Eli Hoenig '17

Hannah Benson '17

Josh Harrington '16

Olivia Meyerson '16

Feel free to reach out to any of them for follow-up questions.
See everyone so soon!

650 meters of Norwegian Chaos

Jack here with another life update:
After 26 hours of flights and airport hell, I finally arrived in Trondheim, but after the last bus to the city and without any of my bags. Luckily I was wearing some stylish Lululemon© pants that kept me comfortable for the next 3 days. The first two weeks I was here there was not a single day that it didn't rain, which was fun but also not because I forgot my rain jacket back in the good ol' USofA.
Here are some photos of me:

Of course, while abroad I would never let my studies slide so I am constantly doing homework and math problems and reading dictionaries and other intelligent things. However, I finished The Merriam-Webster Dictionary (2016 version) so I decided to take a few days off and frolic in the mountains with some friends. Here are some photos of that:

And finally, I'm sure all of you are wondering what the title is about. At about 1am, I found out that there was a rollerski race in the center of campus the next day. So naturally, I had to sign up to get wrecked (or wreck) some Norwegians. When I showed up, I realized that even though it was a college race, Klaebo had raced in it a few years ago and some real fast guys show up every year for the prize money. Whatever, I can take em. After a tough prologue qualifier, I ended up in a fast quarterfinal and one spot away from lucky loser. As a certain president I've been reminded all too much of here says, "SAD!" Regardless, I went home with a pair of Hokas from a raffle drawing so I couldn't really complain.
This is also a picture. You might think that the sign says "JÃ…M" but really it says MÃ…L which means FINISH in Norwegian

Still working on getting people to call me Alaska Jack here, but it's definitely starting to catch on.
Cheers from Scandinavia
Connie
